Animal welfare inspectors take on backyard breeder

Thanks to the bravery of animal inspectors, dogs that were part of an illegal backyard breeding operation were successfully rescued!

Hanover Park, South Africa (April 22, 2024) — As South Africa moves closer to ending the captive breeding of lions, the struggle is still on for all of us to become aware of the many faces of unethical animal breeding (such as illegal breeders in the backyard) and the many heroes who work tirelessly to Stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves.

A recent moment where capeless heroes came to the rescue took place in Hanover Park. There, Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS-SA) inspectors bravely stood up to intimidation and changed the lives of several Pit Bulls exposed to poor living conditions.

According to the AWS-SA, the illegal backyard breeding operation they found in the area was “despicable,” and not the first. The living conditions of the dogs were described as being far below any healthy standard, and the matter was dire.

“The only food they could eat appeared to be rancid vomit on the ground and their water bowls were empty,” the AWSS said.

The inspectors were prepared for a hostile encounter and according to the organization, tensions quickly escalated. But thanks to the SAPS officers who guided them, and their own courage to persevere and not back down, the Pit Bulls were rescued under a court order – the poor puppies’ most difficult days were finally over.

Addressing the Pit Bull debate (which considers whether Pit Bulls should be allowed as pets), the AWS-SA shared that it is certain types of owners that create violent dogs, not the dogs themselves that are born violent!

Thanks to these incredible inspectors, the dogs will be rehabilitated while the previous owner is closely monitored so as not to become a repeat offender.
