Tourist services along the lake shores are still operating, government assures public – Malawi Nyasa Times

As rising water levels in Lake Malawi continue to flood beaches and lodges along the riparian districts of Nkhata-Bay, Nkhotakota, Salima and Mangochi, causing some to close, the Malawi Tourism Council says tourism services are still operating.

The Executive Director of the council, Memory Momba Kamthunzi, said this in Nkhata-Bay after a week-long monitoring of the facilities, while urging owners to register their businesses with the council for membership so that they can benefit from them in times of need can get quick support.

Kamthunzi further urged the lodge owners and those planning to establish themselves in the business to follow proper construction procedures so that their businesses can withstand the negative impacts of climate change as this is the current situation in this districts on the lake shore.

Johnnie Mwanavuli Kabwilo, board member of the Malawi Tourism Council, said the closure of some lodges such as Mahecha, Imperial and the partial damage to the Nkhakar Lodge, including in Nkhata-Bay, had a negative impact on the country’s gross domestic product country due to job losses.

Ebron Soko, manager of Nkhakar Lodge, said although the facility has been partially affected, services are still being offered to their customers as normal and has expressed willingness to become a member of the Malawi Tourism Council.
