Contributions from academia and civil society to the Montevideo Environmental Law Program

The two-day hybrid symposium on Emerging Issues in Environmental Rule of Law will delve deeper into the crucial aspects of environmental governance, focusing on the role of academia and civil society in advancing the Montevideo Environmental Law Programme, UNEP’s flagship program in the field of environmental law. This symposium, organized by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Universidad Carlos III and Universidad de Vigo in collaboration with the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL) and the Global Judicial Institute on the Environment (GJIE), aims promote discussions on pressing environmental challenges such as human rights, plastic, oceans, conflict and biodiversity.

The outcomes of the discussions will be presented at the 2^NL Global Meeting of National Focal Points – the main forum for discussing environmental legislation under the Montevideo Program – to take place from the 3^rd to the 5^e from June 2024 in Nairobi.

Symposium goals:

• The need for further work to develop, implement and disseminate the key elements of the ecological rule of law.
• Towards better dissemination and mainstreaming of the Montevideo Environmental Law Programme, as UNEP’s flagship program in the field of environmental law;
• As input for the Montevideo program 2^NL Global meeting of national focal points, which will hold a specific session dedicated to emerging issues in environmental law;
• How to better leverage synergies and bridge the gap between academia, civil society and international organizations towards a more effective environmental rule of law, including on key emerging issues.
