Herald-mail letters to the editor for Sunday, April 7

Add Robin Handler to the roster of Washington County heroes

To the editor:

Tammy Baker’s article on Sunday, April 7 was excellent!

She truly captured the people and atmosphere that make Washington County great.

I would like to add the late Robin Handler, one of our province’s most dedicated advocates for children, to the list of people who have strengthened our community.

Tammy has truly captured the spirit that makes us all happy and proud of our province.

Thanks, Tammy!

Trump is right to put the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in the Bible

To the editor:

I think it’s a great idea that Trump included the US Constitution and the Declaration of Independence in his new Bible.

In the United States, freedom of religion is a constitutionally protected right enshrined in the religion clauses of the First Amendment. Freedom of religion is linked to the opposite principle of the separation of church and state.

In Sunday’s (April 14) commentary, it was yet another example of a Democrat spewing venomous hatred towards Trump, accusing him of not being religious, not going to church and not knowing a single Bible verse, which is completely untrue.

Some ideas for improving Greencastle

To the editor:

Last year, the City of Greencastle paid $135,000 to purchase a lot across from the post office at the corner of Baltimore and Washington streets. It had been vacant since a fire destroyed the building there in January 2006.

The proposed plans include several locations with park benches, stone pavers, lawns and post lighting, and these would be accessible to individuals, families and organized events in coordination with local organizations. All of this will obviously require more funding, and the council hopes to find a grant to help make this happen.

In the meantime, they should plant a large pine tree there that could be decorated at Christmas, instead of the work involved in placing a tree in the middle of Center Square every November. Greencastle is one of the few towns locally that still places a tree in the middle of a major traffic route.

While nice in function, it is a major problem for large vehicles traveling through Greencastle. All surrounding cities place their trees on the corner of their squares.

Another thought I’d like to share is, did you call our local police department during business hours on a weekday and was your call routed directly to the Franklin County Emergency Dispatch? I called twice last week and got a call both times. Of course my concerns were raised, but I wondered why the police couldn’t answer their own calls. Perhaps as a taxpayer I expect too much from my taxes paid.
