In October 2003, Timothy Treadwell and his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were murdered by the very thing he loved most.

The documentary maker was nicknamed ‘Grizzly Man’ because of his absolute love for bears.

He had a 13-year tradition of flying to Alaska every summer to mingle with the animals. But in that fateful year, disaster struck and his poignant last words were chillingly captured on camera.

During the camping trips, Timothy talked to the bears, played with them, and even touched them because he thought he was one of them and that they were simply misunderstood. Apparently he was repeatedly warned about the dangers by his family and friends, but that didn’t deter his annual visit.

Just hours before the couple was due to fly back home by seaplane, Timothy was mauled to death. And then the bear turned on Annie and killed her too.

The Grizzly Man recorded all of his attacks with the bears and because the couple didn’t have time to remove the lens during the tragic attack, six long minutes of chilling audio were captured documenting their deaths.

It starts with Annie asking if the bear is still there, before Timothy shouts, ‘Get out of here! I’m going to get killed here!’

The zipper of the tent can be heard as Annie runs outside, shouting for her boyfriend to ‘play dead’.

There’s a lot of yelling and screaming as it seems like the bear is releasing Timothy from his grasp and Annie goes over to help.

But as soon as she does, the animal apparently clamps its jaws around his head again and starts yelling for his partner to “hit the bear.”

Annie tells him to “fight back” as she attacks it with a frying pan. After a series of screams, the tape runs out and the couple’s last moments are captured.

Willy Fulton – who was their air taxi pilot for the flight home – knew immediately what had happened when he landed in Katmai National Park.

Normally he would see them standing on the shore waiting to be picked up, but instead there was an eerie silence and the ‘best looking bear’ stood atop a pile of human remains.

The tent was found collapsed and torn next to their unopened evening snack.

A forest ranger saw fingers and an arm in a three-foot mound of grass, mud and twigs, along with some other remains. What was left of Timothy’s head was found nearby.

In the following years, a documentary about their deaths was made by Werner Herzog: Grizzly man.
