Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh visits Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield; Conducts an on-site assessment of the security situation. Commends soldiers for protecting the nation with courage and determination in extreme weather and difficult terrain

“Acts of courage and iron-clad will of our soldiers in the icy Siachen Glacier will always inspire future generations”

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh visited Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield, on April 22, 2024, to assess the security situation firsthand. He also had contact with the soldiers who were deployed in the extreme weather and difficult terrain conditions. The Raksha Mantri was accompanied by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande; General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Lieutenant General, Northern Command, MV Suchindra Kumar; and General Police Commander, Lt. Gen. Rashim Bali of the 14th Corps.

After the aerial reconnaissance, the Raksha Mantri landed at a forward post at an altitude of 45,000 meters and was given a detailed briefing on the operational preparedness in the Siachen Glacier and the prevailing security situation. He also discussed aspects related to operational challenges with the commanders on the ground.

Addressing the soldiers, Shri Rajnath Singh commended them for following the virtuous path of protecting the motherland with courage and determination under extreme conditions. He emphasized that the nation will forever remain indebted to the personnel of the armed forces because their sacrifices make every citizen feel safe. “We live a peaceful life because we have the assurance that our brave soldiers are standing firm at the borders. In the coming era, when the history of national security is being written, the acts of courage and iron-clad will of our soldiers in the icy glacier will be remembered with pride. It will forever be an inspiration to future generations,” he said.

The Raksha Mantri described Siachen not as an ordinary country, but as a symbol of India’s sovereignty and resolve. He stated that just as Delhi is the national capital of India, Mumbai is the financial capital and Bengaluru is the technology capital; Siachen is the capital of courage, perseverance and determination.

The country recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of the success of Operation Meghdoot. Shri Rajnath Singh termed the operation, launched by the Indian Army in Siachen on April 13, 1984, as a golden chapter in the country’s military history. “The success of Operation Meghdoot is a matter of pride for all of us,” he said.

On this occasion, the Raksha Mantri also laid a wreath at the Siachen War Memorial, as a mark of solemn tribute to the braves who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the Motherland.

It may be recalled that Shri Rajnath Singh visited Leh on March 24, 2024 and celebrated Holi with the troops. He was supposed to visit Siachen but this was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. From Leh, the Raksha Mantri had spoken on phone to the soldiers stationed in Siachen and told them that he would soon visit the highest battlefield in the world and interact with them. So, with today’s visit, Shri Rajnath Singh fulfilled his promise despite his busy schedule.
