Should the captive lion industry be banned?

Social and community news

April 22, 2024

With lions near extinction and the constant threat of poaching for their body parts, the industry’s conservation benefits are minimal and very localized in Africa. In practice, in very few places in Africa does trophy hunting fulfill its conservation mandate. The government is currently considering a ban on lion captivity, including the commercial use of lions and their products. Do you support making the captive lion industry illegal?

NO! This question doesn’t really make any sense. The whole point of keeping animals in captivity is to ensure their survival, not see them go extinct. How on earth can you expect these animals to stay alive and healthy if they are not protected and cared for? What is the plan: “drive there” yourself to check them and ward off poachers?

Yes. Banning the captive predator breeding industry is a significant shift in South Africa’s attitude towards the use of its wildlife. Hopefully we will not soon forget the shame of being forced to humanely dispose of almost 12,000 lions.

No, in my opinion the lion captivity industry contributes significantly to South Africa’s economic growth, serving both the hunting and tourism sectors. International visitors flock to see the lions, generating significant revenue for the country. Moreover, some enthusiasts are willing to spend as much as $50,000 on lion hunting. This influx of funds will significantly benefit the South African economy.
