Sarawak Minister: Live stream of ITF World Tennis Junior tournament will boost state tourism

KUCHING, April 22 — The state’s tourism industry will be strengthened with the livestreaming of the Under-18 Premier of Sarawak Cup ITF World Tennis Junior tournament to be held here from April 23 to 28, Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said it here today.

He said Kuching will be the first city in Southeast Asia to implement live scoring and livestreaming of the junior championship on YouTube from tomorrow.

“With this implementation, the whole world can watch the matches live throughout the tournament. This will bring Kuching into the eyes of the world through more publicity on social media,” he told reporters after receiving a courtesy call from Chairman Datuk Patrick of the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association. Karim, who is also Minister of State for Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, said the impact of the tournament extends beyond the confines of the court, adding that Sarawak has not only demonstrated its prowess as a host to international sporting events, but also generated more than RM3 million spring revenue.

Karim said the state will welcome more than 200 players, coaches and parents from 38 countries for the Premier Sarawak Cup, including representatives from Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Ukraine and Russia.

“I am proud of the opportunity to showcase the cultural diversity and sporting prowess that characterize our region,” he said, adding that the ITF World Tennis Tour Junior includes more than 650 tournaments in 140 countries.

Karim said he believes ITF World Tennis Tour Junior provides the best players with a good starting point to become successful in professional tennis.
