Why Mark Zuckerberg feeds his cattle beer and macadamia nuts

Early this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced his entry into farming as he strives to produce the highest quality beef in the world.

Through an Instagram post, Zuckerberg revealed that he had started raising Wagyu and Angus cows on his ranch in Hawaii, adding that the animals would feed on beer and macadamia nuts produced on his farm.

“The cattle are Wagyu and Angus, and they will grow up eating macadamia flour and drinking beer that we grow and produce here on the ranch. We want the entire process to be local and vertically integrated. Each cow eats 5,000 to 10,000 pounds of food every year, so that’s a lot of acres of macadamia trees.

“My daughters help plant the mac trees and take care of our various animals. We are only at the beginning of the journey and it is fun to improve this every season. Of all my projects, this is the best,” Zuckerberg said.

The fourth richest person in the world according to Forbes’ latest world billionaire rankings said he wanted to feed his cows the “dense, most nutritious” food so they can both gain weight and be the tastiest cows.

“As a human being, what do you think it is that you basically just sit and eat a lot? It’s basically like beer and nuts. Nuts, super dense. Beer creates an appetite, which I think people are aware of.” He said.

Research shows that Wagyu beef is among the most expensive in the world, with prices ranging between KSh31,000 and KSh79,000 per head.
