Israel’s military intelligence chief resigns after claiming responsibility for October 7 failures

Tel Aviv (Israel), April 22 (ANI): Israel’s military intelligence chief Major General Aharon Haliva resigned on Monday after failing to prevent Hamas’ deadly surprise attack last October. He will become the first senior official to take responsibility and resign, Al Jazeera reports.

In a resignation letter, Haliva expressed regret over Hamas’ attack on October 7, 2023, acknowledging that his division had failed to fulfill the task entrusted to it.

In consultation with the Chief of the General Staff, the Head of the Intelligence Directorate, MG Aharon Haliva, has requested to terminate his position, following his leadership responsibility as Head of the Intelligence Directorate before the events of October 7. …— Israeli Defense Forces (@IDF) April 22, 2024

The letter said that since then he “carried that black day with him” and expressed his lasting pain.” On Saturday, October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out a deadly surprise attack on the state of Israel. The intelligence wing under my command failed to fulfill the task entrusted to us,” he said. “I have carried that black day with me ever since. Day after day, night after night. I will carry the terrible pain of the war with me forever,” he also said. Haliva’s resignation marks a significant step as the first senior official to resign in the wake of the attack. The military confirmed its decision, saying it followed his recognition of leadership responsibility, Al Jazeera reported.

While there were expectations of the dismissal of Haliva and other officials due to the glaring failures that led to the attack, the timing remains uncertain amid ongoing conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, in addition to heightened tensions with Iran.

Although Haliva and some others have accepted blame for the October attack, notable figures such as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have not fully acknowledged responsibility for the attack, Al Jazeera reported. (ANI)
