Nobina has awarded a contract extension for sustainable transit in the Stockholm region

Nobina, the pioneering Scandinavian public transport operator, has announced that it has been awarded a significant contract extension with the Stockholm Region (SL) to operate and improve transport services in Haninge and Nynäshamn. This new agreement underlines a shared commitment to sustainability, in line with SL’s ambitious target to achieve net zero emissions in public transport.

Under the terms of the contract, Nobina will oversee nearly 50 critical routes, facilitating daily commuting between residential areas and key transport hubs in southern and central Stockholm. In particular, this partnership emphasizes a steady shift towards sustainability, ensuring that all transit activities remain fossil-free. In addition, a substantial fleet expansion of approximately 135 new electric buses is planned for deployment in Haninge and Nynäshamn, representing a significant step forward in reducing CO2 emissions.

Martin Pagrotsky, Managing Director of Nobina Sweden, expressed his pride in the continued trust placed by the Stockholm region to promote transport services in the Södertörn region, stating: “We are proud of the continued trust to operate and and, together with SL, continue the transition from fossil-free to emission-free. We now look forward to developing both traffic and cooperation and providing our passengers with a reliable, safe, accessible and sustainable public transport service.”

The contract extension covers a decade, from the start of traffic operations in June 2025 until 2035, and includes a total fleet of approximately 150 scheduled buses.

In particular, interested parties have the opportunity to challenge the award decision until April 29, 2024, ensuring transparency and due process in the contract award process. This development represents a crucial step forward in promoting environmentally friendly public transport solutions in the Stockholm region, in line with broader environmental objectives.
