ATLANTA, GA (TIP): An Indian national awaiting deportation for illegally entering the United States has died at an Atlanta hospital, federal authorities said Wednesday, April 17.
The Indian Consulate in New York has been informed of the death of Jaspal Singh, 57, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said, adding that his next of kin have also been informed.
Singh died on April 15 at an Atlanta hospital. An autopsy is underway to determine the official cause of death, ICE said. Singh, an Indian citizen, first legally entered the US on October 25, 1992. On January 21, 1998, an immigration judge ordered Singh’s removal from the US, and at an unknown date, Singh voluntarily returned to India.
On June 29, 2023, he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers as he illegally entered the United States at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Border Patrol transferred custody of Singh to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), Atlanta. He was held at a federal processing center in Atlanta, where he continued his immigration proceedings.
When a non-citizen dies in a detention center, it is mandatory for the ERO to notify Congress, non-governmental organization stakeholders, and the media within two business days and post a press release with relevant details on the public website.
