The Parks Trust Milton Keynes tackle plastic pollution in the city – MKFM 106.3FM

Today, Earth Day is all about celebrating and protecting our planet. This year’s Earth Day theme ‘Planet vs Plastics’ focuses on plastic pollution and raising awareness of the associated health risks.

Plastics pose a significant danger to all living things and can disrupt fragile ecosystems. That’s why The Parks Trust, the charity that looks after parks, lakes and woodlands in Milton Keynes, is committed to reducing plastic pollution.

Since April 2022, the Trust’s operational staff, with the support of volunteers, have collected more than 100 tonnes of litter and waste from green spaces. About 30% of waste is plastic (bottles, packaging, cup lids, bags and polystyrene) and poses a risk to wildlife, especially in waterways, lakes and ponds.

The Parks Trust Outdoor Learning Team are also working to create a better future, training young people in Milton Keynes to care for the natural environment and learn the importance of not littering.

Do you feel inspired? You can also contribute to the goals of Earth Day. Supporting the local environment can be as simple as taking your waste home, reusing plastic products or taking part in a community waste collection.
