Africa is committed to science, technology and innovation for a prosperous future

The African Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Summit opened in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, attracting African officials, delegates and experts committed to shaping a prosperous future for the continent through investment in science, technology and innovation.

The event, organized by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) in partnership with the African Union Commission and other stakeholders, highlights the critical importance of science, innovation and technology for sustainable development in Africa.

Bility Mole, Ethiopian Minister of Technology and Innovation, highlighted the transformative impact of innovation in key sectors such as agriculture, clean energy and healthcare. He cited Ethiopia as an example, describing the country’s initiatives to boost agricultural productivity, achieve food self-sufficiency and combat climate change.

Antonio Pedro, Deputy Executive Secretary for Program Support at the Economic Commission for Africa, called for investment in human capital and research and development, as well as the adoption of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and genomics.

Lydia Arthur Brito, Deputy Director for Natural Sciences at UNESCO, highlighted the potential of international cooperation in science to promote peace and sustainable development in Africa.

However, she also pointed to the financial sustainability challenge faced by many African technology hubs, which are largely dependent on international grants.

Javier Pérez, EU Ambassador to the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa, announced a €279 million investment in Africa for research and innovation, highlighting the importance of empowering young people and women to become the next technology entrepreneurs and innovators.

The Science, Technology and Innovation Forum therefore provides a critical platform to catalyze cooperation, disseminate technology and innovation, and accelerate policies and actions aimed at moving Africa towards a prosperous and sustainable future.
