Embracing family and faith at Elim Village Garrison Crossing

Like many residents of Elim Village Garrison Crossing, Casey Jansen’s life is all about family and faith. When the time came for Casey to take his next steps in retirement community life, he turned to these two pillars for guidance.

“My family and I moved from the Netherlands to Canada in 1953. I am the second oldest of nine and my family has always been close. All eight of my siblings live here in Chilliwack, and other than living on Vancouver Island for two years, I have lived here my entire life,” says Casey. “I wanted to move back to Chilliwack when the ferry travel started to become too much. My younger brother helped me find Elim Village, and after we had a tour, I was very impressed!”

Casey was drawn to Elim’s faith-based roots and the sense of community among residents and staff. He was also impressed with the Summit Dining Room at The Hawthorn, where residents enjoy five-star restaurant quality meals.

“Residents of another place I looked at were not happy with the food there. They ate out a lot, despite paying for their meals as part of their monthly expenses. I had heard from many others that the food at The Hawthorn was great, and it certainly is! says Casey.

“I’ve had my family come here for dinner before, and they love it. When I moved to The Hawthorn, they all came to the Summit Dining Room and had a “welcome home” party for me! They were all very happy with the food served here.”

Darlene leads Hymns & Praise, held every Thursday afternoon at The Hawthorn.

Since moving to The Hawthorn, Casey’s days have been filled with joy and connection. The weekly Hymns & Praise meetings are a highlight, with Casey singing uplifting songs and working together with her fellow residents. Led by Darlene, Elim’s office manager, who delights residents with her beautiful voice and piano playing, these gatherings are cherished by everyone.

Casey also enjoyed daily walks to nearby shops, or along the Vedder River with his granddaughter and great-grandchildren. For Casey and many other residents, The Hawthorn is more than a building; it is a sanctuary where family, faith and community come together.
