Jalandhar, April 22 – The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) got a major boost in the Doaba region today as former Punjab Pradesh Congress president and former MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee joined the party in the presence of SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Mr. Kaypee was also nominated as the SAD party candidate from this reserved constituency on this occasion.

Mr. Sukhbir Badal asserted that Mr. Kaypee was a sincere politician who had made immense contributions to civil society and the Dalit Samaj. He said that “the SAD will gain immensely because of the credibility that Mr Kaypee has in this constituency”.

Speaking at his residence on the occasion, Mr Kaypee said he was impressed by the record infrastructure development undertaken by Mr Sukhbir Badal during the erstwhile SAD-led government. He said he chose to join the SAD as it was the only one committed to resolving the pending issues in Punjab. “Moreover, I feel that in the current political environment, only a regional party can fulfill the aspirations of Punjabis.”

The SAD president also slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) policy of targeting minorities and said the Prime Minister should not have made an anti-minority statement. He said the BJP policy of pitting one religious community against another was not in the interest of the nation. “This nation belongs to everyone. Even if there is only one person of a particular religion in the country, he has the same right as those who are in the majority.” Mr Badal also had a message for all national parties on this occasion: “All parties must consider this country as belonging to everyone and not to one community alone. Otherwise the country cannot develop,” he added.

The SAD president said that unlike the Delhi-based parties, which pit one religion against another to secure votes, the SAD has never allowed this to happen in Punjab. “The BJP must learn from the SAD. When we were in government, we only had one agenda. Peace and communal harmony. This is why people from all religious denominations considered former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal as one of them. This is the level of trust that members of different religious denominations have in the SAD.

Mr. Badal also spoke about the fact that development in Punjab took place only when the SAD was in power. “Look around you – all the flyovers, road extensions and modern sewerage facilities were built during the previous SAD government.” He said the same was the case in other parts of the state. He also spoke about how the SAD had improved the lot of every section of society, be it farmers who got free power supply and irrigation facilities, the poor who got social benefits like aata-daal, shagun and old age pension and the common people. man who got free facilities like Sewa Kendras, besides 200 units of electricity.

Senior leader Gurpartap Singh Wadala also spoke on the occasion and highlighted how the Congress had wronged Kaypee by giving the party ticket to a tainted leader – Charanjit Singh Channi. Other senior leaders present on the occasion included Kulwant Singh Manan, Baldev Singh Khaira, Iqbal Singh Dhindsa and Gurdev Kaur Sangha. EOM
