Dozens of animals needing water in the southern suburbs

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is appealing for help to address the current water crisis in Grassy Park. Since Sunday, 500 animals, including dogs, cats, horses and farm animals, have been experiencing water shortages at the facility.

The organization is also concerned about pets in the area and neighboring suburbs.

On Sunday, the City of Cape Town informed residents of a water outage due to a leak on Blackbird Avenue in Parkwood. The water supply at the SPCA was turned off around 5 p.m.

HOW TO HELP?

The animal shelter said the public can help by donating containers filled with water.

“Deliver filled water at home with water containers of 2 to 5 liters or cool drink bottles. Drop off at 1st Ave & First Road, Grassy Park. Send a donation to help, we have had to invest in portable water containers and other unexpected expenses to manage the crisis,” said spokesperson Belinda Abraham.

Additionally, the organization says water and donations will not only help it continue its vital work in Grassy Park, but will also help communities where animals are without water.

The city added that the leak is due to a vent valve that was destroyed. Water and Sanitation MMC, Zahid Badroodien said repairs are underway. The aim is for the water to be restored by Tuesday morning.
