Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in Spain’s Canary Islands to demand changes to the mass tourism model they say is sweeping the Atlantic archipelago. “We Canarians are tired of being second and third class citizens, we are tired of overcrowding, of institutional abuse, of low salaries and of our heritage being destroyed,” said Nieves Rodrigues Rivera, a teacher and writer.
