Judge rules that Grizzlies’ Ja Morant acted in self-defense against teen

In a victory for Ja Morant, a Tennessee judge ruled Monday that the Memphis Grizzlies superstar had fairly asserted his self-defense in a lawsuit brought by a teenager he punched in July 2022, according to a court document obtained by ESPN.

The ruling comes after a civil immunity hearing in Memphis in December 2023, where Morant testified that he “first” went to then-17-year-old Joshua Holloway to protect himself during an altercation that led to Holloway filing a lawsuit in September 2022 filed a lawsuit accusing Morant of assault.

The argument started during a basketball game. Holloway, reportedly frustrated by losing several games, was accused of throwing a one-handed pass to Morant during a check-ball situation.

The ball hit Morant in the face, at which point Morant said Holloway took a step toward him and then stepped forward and punched Holloway.

After that punch, Morant’s friend, Davonte Pack, punched Holloway – an act for which Pack was later arrested for misdemeanor assault. The charges against Pack were later dismissed.
