Homemade food sent to Arvind Kejriwal in jail other than prescribed diet: court

A Delhi court on Monday noted that the items in the home-cooked food delivered to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar Jail were different from what his own doctor had prescribed. His doctor did not prescribe food such as potatoes, Arbi (taro) and mangoes, but these were included in the meals provided to him, the court said.

Special Judge for CBI and ED cases Kaveri Baweja noted that the jail authorities have not explained why the food items that were not as per Kejriwal’s medical prescription were allowed to be sent to him.

The court’s comment comes days after the The Enforcement Directorate alleged that Arvind Kejriwal, a diabetic patient, consumed mangoes, aloo puri and sweets daily to raise his blood sugar level to make grounds for medical bail.

The court on Monday ruled that the Delhi Chief Minister will continue to receive home-cooked food provided he strictly adheres to a diet plan prescribed by a medical board of AIIMS, which includes senior endocrinologists and diabetologists.

Until the medical board comes up with a diet plan, Arvind Kejriwal’s family has been directed to strictly adhere to the diet plan prescribed by his doctor and the court order from April 1 when he was sent to court.

Tihar jail authorities must ensure that Kejriwal’s food items do not deviate from the medically prescribed diet, the court said.

The court passed the order while rejecting the Delhi Chief Minister’s plea for daily consultations with his GP via video call.

NO INSULIN FOR KEJRIWAL, A HYPERGLYCEMIC PATIENT

The court further said Arvind Kejriwal’s plea to get insulin cannot be taken at his word alone as he suffers from hyperglycemia, a condition in which there is too much sugar (glucose) in the blood.

The AIIMS medical board was asked to submit a report on whether Kejriwal currently requires insulin. If intervention is required, the final decision will be taken by the jail authorities in consultation with the medical board, the court said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claims the Chief Minister is not getting insulin and being pushed towards a “slow death”.

Arvind Kejriwal is currently in Tihar Jail after he was arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.
