Naruto’s Family Tree Explained: Everything you need to know about Naruto’s connection to the ninja world

Popverse’s top stories of the day

What do Naruto, the anime about a courageous young ninja who overcomes all kinds of obstacles to become the most powerful ninja in his village, and The Fast and the Furious franchise, the long-running film series about driving in increasingly ridiculous ways, have in common? They’re both about family.

Not only is finding his family an important part of Naruto’s journey as a character, but family lines also hold special weight within the lore of the setting. As such, understanding Naruto’s family tree is an important part of understanding the world created by Masashi Kishimoto.

It all starts with Kaguya Otsutsuki

In the beginning there was Kaguya Otsutsuki, the origin of all chakra in the Naruto universe. This makes her one of the most important figures in the lore of the setting. Kaguya rears her head several times throughout the series as a major antagonist bent on controlling all of humanity. Her twin sons, Hamura and Hagoromo, were the first humans born with chakra and used their powers to fight their mother and seal her in the moon.

Hagoromo Otsutsuki is often referred to as the Sage of the Six Paths due to his role in the creation of Ninshu, which would become the foundation for all of ninja society in Naruto. Hagoromo helped defeat his mother, spread chakra to every living being and split the powerful ten-tailed beast into multiple beings. His sons, Asura and Indra, would be continually reincarnated into the world as bitter but loving rivals. Not only is Naruto the reincarnation of Asura, but he also has a literal blood tie to Hagoromo through his mother’s Uzumaki bloodline.

Naruto is a cousin to most of the major clans in the show

Since almost every major family in the Naruto universe has inherited a powerful jutsu through their bloodline, they can all trace their lineage back to the Sage of Six Paths. This means that the Senju, Uchiha, and Hyuga clans are both distant cousins of the Uzumaki clan that Naruto comes from. Knowing this kind of lore, most of the major events in the Naruto manga are treated as a major family dispute – only with the end of the world at stake.

In addition to his ties to the notable clans in the Hidden Leaf Village, Naruto also has a notable cousin in the form of Kimimaro Kaguya. He is the last member of the Kaguya clan which was founded by Kaguya Otsutsuki himself.

Of all his distant relatives, Naruto only has one real cousin that we see on the show. That’s Karin, one of the last surviving members of the Uzumaki clan. She plays an important role in Naruto Shippuden as a follower of Sasuke after his defeat of Orochimaru.

Naruto’s immediate family

Throughout his adventures, the one thing Naruto always wanted was a family of his own. This is because he never really knew who he was growing up. His father was Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, both of whom died before the anime even started. Minato was the Fourth Hokage and considered one of the most powerful ninjas of his time, while Kushina was one of the last members of the Uzumaki clan that had almost been wiped out years before.

Naruto eventually finds a sense of family in the form of Team 7, which consists of Sakura and Sasuke along with their teacher Kakashi, and gains the acceptance of the entire Hidden Leaf Village, but he also gains a real family when he marries Hinata Hyuga. This makes him a member of the Hyuga clan by marriage and shares a distant ancestor with them.

Naruto’s legacy continues with Boruto

Since a great show can’t be stopped by something as simple as the manga ending, a sequel series to Naruto was announced shortly after the anime ended. Titled Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, it largely did what it advertised: it’s about Naruto’s son, Boruto, and the adventures he goes on.
