FACT CHECK: No, illegal immigrants are not sent to Wisconsin to receive “free voting ID.”

A video shared on X alleges that the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is providing illegal immigrants in Wisconsin with a “free ID to vote.”

Verdict: false

A free ID to vote is reserved for U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 years old in the next election, a WisDOT spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email.

Checking facts:

A Republican candidate for Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate race, Eric Hovde, has said he doesn’t mind older people voting, following a divisive comment about older people voting, according to The Hill. His initial comment was based on hearing reports from people wondering how seriously ill people in nursing homes could cast their votes, the outlet reported.

An

However, the claim is incorrect. The program is reserved for US citizens only. A page similar to one of the screenshots on the WisDOT website states: “U.S. citizens can get a free ID to vote even if you don’t have the documentation to get a regular Wisconsin ID.” (RELATED: Are There Laws Criminalizing Giving Voters Food and Drink in Line at the Polls?)

Another page on the site specifies that even if U.S. citizens can receive a free voting ID, even if they do not have all of the following documents: “Proof of name and date of birth, proof of identity, Wisconsin residency, and proof of U.S. citizenship.” ” The site states that you should “bring what you have to the DMV” and that you must be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old in the next election to be eligible.

“Wisconsin does not have a ‘voter ID.’ Many forms of identification are allowed at the ballot box,” a WisDOT spokesperson told Check Your Fact in an email. “A driver’s license or state identification card are the most common forms of identification that can be used at polls in Wisconsin. Free ID to vote is only open to U.S. citizens who will be at least 18 years old at the next general election. There are documentation requirements to prove that the applicant is who they say they are.”

The spokesperson cited a source from the Wisconsin Elections Commission that lists acceptable forms of photo ID allowed to vote.

There are no credible news reports to support the claim. Moreover, the video was posted by Wall Street monkeyswho has ‘Conspiracy Theorist’ in biography.
