Teenage girl killed in crossfire between gangs: DA and ANC play politics while children in the Western Cape suffer

April 19, 2024

The Western Cape is experiencing levels of gang-related violence unprecedented in three decades of democracy.

Not only has the violence gotten out of hand, but it has spilled over into traditionally gang-ridden communities. In the last 24 hours, two people have been tragically killed in separate incidents in Belgravia, a relatively middle-class suburb of Athlone – including a completely innocent year 11 girl who was tragically killed in a crossfire between gangs this afternoon .

Neither the national police nor the significant crime-fighting resources of the province and the city of Cape Town are having any impact.

Instead, it is volunteers who join neighborhood watches and other anti-crime initiatives, who do most of the work, calling the ambulances, collecting the bodies and reassuring traumatized community members that they are not alone.

But even neighborhood watches are being politicized in Cape Town. Those who demonstrate commitment to the DA are funded and supported, but the others are not. Neighborhood Watches are a community’s first line of defense. They play a crucial role and must be properly resourced, regardless of political considerations.

As families hide behind drawn curtains and closed doors in most of Cape Town, the province’s premier and the city’s mayor are heading into the elections to sell their message that this is the best governed province and city in the country is.

Best candidate for whom, Mr. Winde?
