Sustainability, science and education united in the sustainable electric sailboat Galaxie

Technology, science, education and social responsibility come together in the renovated sailboat project ‘Galaxie’, which, after an investment of 600,000 euros, will become the first 100% electric training ship of more than 20 meters in length in the Balearic Islands, with the mission of strengthening protection of the Balearic Islands.

This emblematic vessel, donated to the Joves Navegants Foundation for the education and training of disadvantaged youth in the islands, renews its image and features advanced, zero-emission technological equipment to promote research and awareness in the field of marine environment protection.

TrueWorld, an entity specialized in implementing technological solutions for decarbonization, is leading this project which, among other things, considers replacing the combustion engine of the sailboat “Galaxie” with an electric motor from PhoenixOne.

“Galaxy” and the “Love the Mediterranean” initiative.

The Love The Mediterranean initiative in Alcudiamar, in the port of Alcudia, Mallorca, presented this training sailboat of 21 meters in length and 5 meters in width, whose electrification required an investment of 409,000 euros, as explained by the CEO and partners. TrueWorld founder Marco Mendoza, who highlighted the support of sponsors to make the project a reality.

After fifteen months of work to convert the boat to 100% electric, the ‘Galaxie’ will sail to Palma thanks to renewable energy. Mendoza explained that the ship contains batteries that last between eight and 10 hours, flexible solar panels integrated into the sails and wind motors that charge during navigation.

The ship will embark on its first scientific mission at dawn, which is expected to culminate in its arrival at the Palma International Boat Show (PIBS) at Mall Ville in Palma.

Technological transformation

During the presentation in Alcudiamar, Mendoza reiterated, in front of about thirty attendees, the joint efforts of institutions, companies, professionals and employees who have made the conversion of sailboats possible to begin a new phase.

At the Maritime Exhibition in Palma, the public can visit this sailboat and learn more about this non-profit initiative, which aims to unite technology, innovation, science and social impact, which is fundamental for corporate social responsibility, as stated from the real world.

The PhoenixOne shipyard was responsible for the engine conversion, and Banca March, Brow Project, Alcudiamar, Quantum Sails and Omni Access, among others, have collaborated on several lines of this initiative, which aims to reach Ibiza wherever it will be and will be . is expected to organize lectures and workshops.
