Snickers parodies the in-flight chaos ahead of the summer tourist season

Buckle up, put away your tray and brace yourself for laughter as Snickers’ “Hungry Skies” commercial showcases the antics of passengers at 30,000 feet.

Ah, the familiar woes of economy class travel, whether it’s putting up with a neighbor’s movie blaring through the phone speakers, waiting for a crying baby’s symphony to end, or struggling with the stretching exercises from a fellow passenger who seems determined to invade your personal space .

To address the out-of-pocket behavior of some airline passengers, Snickers, the beloved chocolate bar from Mars Inc., has launched its latest campaign, “Hungry Skies.”

The 45-second ad takes viewers on a turbulent in-flight journey like no other. Prepare to witness unruly passengers participating in in-flight yoga, turning their seats into an in-flight spa/nail salon and even an older woman pressing the flight attendant’s call button like it’s a panic button on a a sinking ship.

‘Hungry Skies’ is an extension of Snickers’ famous ‘You’re Not You When You’re Hungry’ campaign and aims to attract more consumers to the brand. The goal is to capitalize on Snickers’ momentum, which grew more than 13% globally last year.

The work comes just in time for the summer travel rush, with 118 million Americans expected to plan airline tickets and hotel stays, while spending is expected to exceed $424 billion.

“For nearly two decades, Snickers has been the satisfying solution for moments when hunger makes us feel down,” Rankin Carroll, Chief Brand Officer of Mars Snacking, said in a statement. “With international tourism expected to grow by 15% by 2024 and more than 6 million people flying every day, this campaign captures the increasingly absurdly relatable examples we all encounter when traveling and reminds hungry travelers to grab a Snickers, to keep them on track as they navigate the turbulent air of travel.”

The multimedia campaign was created by BBDO New York, part of Omnicom.

“Not a day goes by that you don’t see a viral video of someone on a plane with their money,” said Kristin Clark, Senior Vice President and Creative Director at BBDO.

Matt Low, senior vice president and creative director, added: “When we noticed that SNICKERS had never expanded their iconic You’re Not You When You’re Hungry campaign to travel, we knew Snickers had to come to the rescue. ”

The work will appear at and beyond airports.
