Hattiesburg man arrested for attempted murder in connection with Martin Luther King Ave. shooting

A Hattiesburg man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot another man in the face during a recent altercation on Martin Luther King Avenue in Hattiesburg.

Tate Rutland, public information officer for the Hattiesburg Police Department, said officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 200 block of Avenue on April 21 around 11:30 p.m. Upon arrival, the police found that there had been an altercation between a group of people, during which a shot from a firearm struck a man in the face.

The day after the shooting, 24-year-old Damond Harvey of Hattiesburg was taken into custody and charged with one count of attempted murder for his alleged involvement in the incident. Harvey was committed to the Forrest County Correctional Facility; He was jailed there as of April 22, according to the Forrest County Sherriff’s Office website.

The shooting victim, who has not yet been identified, was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. He was later airlifted to a hospital in Jackson for additional treatment.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and more arrests are pending.
