New exhibition: Tearing up Vogue and Mining the Detritus | News and events

An exhibition of practice-oriented PhD research by Ehryn Torrell can be seen in the Martin Hall Exhibition Space from 2 to 10 May.

Montage is not a single artistic medium like painting or drawing, but rather an intermedium (Higgins, 1965). It often involves cutting up and recomposing photographic images to say something about representation and ways of seeing.

In her research, Torrell has asked the following questions: How can montage enable an artist to deconstruct and challenge fashion media, especially the racialized and gendered bodies in Fashion Magazines? What mounting methods can be used? Does using a fashion magazine as source material run the risk of giving voice to already dominant or normative images of women? Torrell has explored these questions and this exhibition will show her answer.

The artist has selected eight Fashion And Teen fashion magazines produced between 1968-2017 in France, the US and Italy as source material to create one montage of each issue on paper. These “primary montages” will be on display alongside the magazines to show how Torrell mines the waste from the process to find out what impact, if any, she had on the resource.
