After Hamas attack, the head of Israel’s military intelligence resigns

The military said on April 22 that the head of Israel’s military intelligence has resigned and accepted responsibility for the mistakes that led to October’s militant attack by Hamas, which resulted in months of fighting.

Major General Aharon Haliva said he still lives with that “black day”.

For the Palestinians in Gaza, Monday was a day of new horror. The area’s civil protection agency said health workers had discovered about 200 bodies of people killed by Israeli forces and buried in a hospital in the town of Khan Yunis over the past three days.

Asked for comment, the Israeli military said: “We will get back to you on this.”

Haliva is the first top Israeli official to resign over his failure to prevent the Hamas attack, which targeted the Israeli government and military.

“The intelligence department under my command failed to fulfill the task entrusted to us,” Haliva said in his resignation letter. “I have carried that black day with me ever since.
