Francis Ogolla: Family of KDF pilot mourns as children seek answers about father’s fate after helicopter crash

The tragic crash of the KDF helicopter that killed the Chief of Defense Forces, General Francis Ogolla and nine other KDF soldiers has left the family of Major George Benson Magondu devastated.

Magondu, a 29-year-old pilot, was among the victims in the Chesugon crash in Elgeyo-Marakwet on April 18.

Described by his family as a humble and selfless man, Magondu was deeply loved not only by his family but also by his entire community.

How Magondu’s family learned of his death

His mother, Mary Wambui, told how they heard about the crash through Magondu’s wife, who is also a captain in the army.

They were told he had suffered serious facial injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to Citizen TV, Wambui states that her son has left a big hole.

“The gap is wide because George was a family man. At the age of 29, he behaved like a 40-year-old father. He loved the family, the children and his wife. He could sacrifice all his time and money to support the children. keep Well, said Wambui.

“We couldn’t sleep. Everyone was crying, including the little children, because George was very modest,” a neighbor recalled.

Magondu’s children, who are struggling with the loss of their father, have been asking about him since the tragic incident.

“The children keep asking their mother about the whereabouts of their father. When my daughter hears the questions, she is overcome with tears and does not know how to respond,” said his mother-in-law, Maureen Akinyi.

How did Magondu rise to become a major?

Magondu’s ambitions were high; he not only controlled the CDF, but also transported high-ranking government officials.

His family speaks of his ambition to reach the position of Chief of the Armed Forces, a goal he pursued diligently.

Magondu excelled academically from his time at Moi Forces Academy to his further training in Lanet, South Africa, Moi Airbus and Jordan in the United States, demonstrating his dedication to his profession.

Despite his young age, he had already reached the rank of major within the KDF.

“At the age of 29, he had become a major. He always said he would become chief of the armed forces,” Wambui added.

He will be buried at his home in Karimeno in Laikipia province.
