NOTABLE SCIENTISTS WIN 2024 JAPAN PRIZE FOR SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 (Bernama) — The Japan Prize Foundation recently held an awards ceremony to present the Japan Prize to scientists who have made creative and dramatic achievements in global scientific and technological development, and contributed significantly to realizing peace and prosperity for all humanity at the Imperial Hotel Tokyo in Tokyo’s Chiyoda Ward.

Prof. Brian J. Hoskins from the United Kingdom and Prof. John Michael Wallace from the United States (US) were the winners in the areas of resources, energy, environment and social infrastructure; while Prof. Ronald M. Evans (USA) won the fields of Medical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

According to a statement, each field was awarded 100 million Japanese yen, along with a certificate and a medal. (100 Japanese Yen = RM3.08)

The Japanese Emperor and Empress attended the ceremony alongside the heads of the three branches of government and other related officials, representatives of various other elements of society, in addition to 150 guests.

His Majesty the Emperor delivered a speech, followed by speeches by the three winners and congratulations by the Speaker of the House of Councilors, Hidehisa Otsuji.

Each year, the Japan Prize winners are recommended by approximately 15,500 leading scientists and engineers around the world, and determined by a rigorous examination that lasts approximately one year.

This year’s winners were selected from a total of 328 applicants, with the foundation receiving 130 nominations in the fields of Resources, Energy, Environment and Social Infrastructure, and 198 nominations in the fields of Medical Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
