‘Family Guy’ star says his mother hated the show so much she tried to get it canceled

Family man star Patrick Warburton has revealed that his family still does not approve of his involvement in the show.

Warburton has voiced Joe Swanson since the first season of the comedy, which debuted in 1999 and has run for 22 seasons. The show is known for its crude humor and storylines related to stereotypes and frequently features satirical commentary about American culture.

However, speaking at PaleyFest LA, Warburton said his family disapproved of the series, created by Seth MacFarlane, and even tried to get it canceled.

“They hate the show more today than they did 25 years ago,” Warburton said (via People magazine). “My father spent three months in a monastery. He almost became a monk,” he explained.

He continued: “My mother went around the neighborhood when I was 13 years old handing out pamphlets about the sins of masturbation, which kept me out of the cool crowd. So they hate the show.

He shared details about how his mother was involved in the series being taken off air. “My mother was a member of the American Television Council and they tried to get the show canceled,” Warburton explained.

“I helped support my parents Family man money. She tried to get me to sign the petition (to cancel the show). I said, ‘Mom, if you think I’m not going to talk about this publicly, this is the greatest irony. You are laundering money, you are laundering it for yourself.” They hate it even more today.”

Warburton remains confident that the show, which has already been renewed for a 23rd season and will run through 2025, is still popular. He said: “Family man is a show that has been around for 25 years. ‘It’s a cartoon. It’s satire. As long as it stays relevant and current and creative, (it will) keep going and moving.”

This follows a recent comment from MacFarlane, in which he said he didn’t yet see a “good reason” to end the show.
