The finale is here and it literally has everything going for it: Asian Junkie

Hello and welcome back to the summaries for Return from crime sceneand we record where we left off in episode 9. We get to see what’s behind the false wall in the bookcase in episode 10, and it’s something that ties together every case this season.

Sadly, this will be the conclusion of the show, but at least it’s fitting.

In the previous summary, I made an overview of the information that the viewers have about the victim and the suspects, but this time I think I have to change it a bit, because a lot of the investigation revolved around revelations about the victim. Furthermore, this case requires knowledge of every prior case to have full impact.

Victim – Kwak Gokdu

Okay, so as some speculated in the comments on the previous episode recap, it was indeed related to the cult from the last case. In fact, the room was actually a shrine to the last victim in Shin Gyoju. Although it was initially thought to be some sort of tribute to him, it was revealed that Shin Gyoju is still alive because he was tipped off that the Independence Army would try to kill him during the ceremony, so he let Shin Dongsaeng (lol) take his place and he was the one who died in the last case.

To maintain his power while hidden, he made a deal with the victim that, in exchange for loyalty to do his bidding, he would be allowed to use all of the cult’s resources. The story is that the sect’s property was purchased by Fungmu (founded together with President Key’s father) and donated to the government, whereupon they built the dormitory from the second case and the district court from the third case (also under the body of Son Jang, they built the dormitory from the second case and the court from the third case). mass graves of the Sunsun cult found).

But in the end, the victim planned to hold a press conference after writing a speech revealing that Shin Gyoju was still alive, that he planned to use chemtrails to infect the world, and then have Fungmu sell the drug to to take over the world. Moreover, it has been revealed that the anti-aging research has paid off and reversed aging, while Shin Gyoju had undergone extensive plastic surgery on his body and face.

Basically the point of this whole backstory is that whoever reached the age and re-formed Shin Gyoju is the killer.

Mrs. Jang (Jang Dong Min) and Secretary Jang (Jang Jin)

They were actually excluded in the most confused way, lmao.

It makes sense though.

Mrs. Jang had essentially no evidence against her and no real motive, while Secretary Jang had all the ammunition he needed to get real revenge without murder.

President Key (SHINee’s Key)

This was a bit interesting, but maybe not for suspicious reasons. Coincidentally, his father retired in 1990, the same year the anti-aging formula was found, and it is inferred that after the anti-aging formula, he is actually his father. That’s probably why he got promoted so quickly and why he angrily wrote in the papers about the company’s demise… because it’s his. Unfortunately, that would also mean he isn’t Shin Gyoju, which apparently rules him out as well.

Researcher Joo (Joo Hyun Young)

Okay, so her USB was found in Shin Gyoju’s room and contained a research diary with Kim Dongryo’s work in it. That was made by the victim after Shin Gyoju’s CCTV footage showed her stealing the JV-45 healing work, and she admits she was in the lab waiting for the victim to leave so she could go pick it up.

The most suspicious thing is that you go into turbo speech mode while trying to explain everything.

Assuming she was actually Shin Gyoju, it would stand to reason that anyone who knew of her research successes would be dead. And a regular meeting with the victim would make sense because it could be a time to give instructions, with the USB and all of that being a cover.

Yujin Kwak (Yujin from IVE)

Lots of circumstantial evidence that doesn’t seem significant, but allows him to best represent Shin Gyoju. The victim wrote in his diary that God tried to rule over Fungmu again when Yujin Kwak returned, that his alleged mother did not look pregnant in the photo with his alleged father, and that despite his mother having no diary entries about her child. conveying so many deeply personal thoughts.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that Shin Gyoju’s plastic surgery took place in America, which is clearly where Yujin Kwak was reportedly exiled to at the time.

Opinion

In terms of backstory and characterization, this episode was great at tying up all the loose ends. However, they spent a lot of time unraveling it, and so the actual deduction part of this case is quite simplistic in terms of clues… which ironically made it quite difficult.

Based on the clues, it seemed certain that it would be either Researcher Joo or Yujin Kwak, but nothing was definitive between those two candidates. There was a lot of circumstantial evidence about their motive and means, but I mostly had to guess.

Besides what I said, the thing about researcher Joo is that for her to be Shin Gyoju, the backstory has a lot more ways for it to go wrong because of her expertise in science. That never seems to be debated, and it’s unlikely Shin Gyoju has that knowledge. Furthermore, there is simply no evidence behind the Yujin Kwak story, and both the narcissistic trait and the room full of mirrors would match that of Shin Gyoju.

Perhaps even more important are the meta reasons about this between the two. It seems that investigator Joo has clearly been edited and played off as the perpetrator, and the lack of Yujin Kwak’s title is itself suspicious because it is unique. Plus, the potential social mess of having someone change gender just to hide the fact that he’s a cult leader, and then making her a murderer on top of that, would be a bit risky, while Yujin has been accused before, but not yet the perpetrator is. So Yujin Kwak is my choice.

To vote

  • Yujin Kwak: 4 (Detective Park, Investigator Joo, Mrs. Jang, Secretary Jang)
  • Researcher Joo: 2 (Yujin Kwak, President Park)
  • President Key: 1 (Detective Park)
  • Secretary Jang: 0
  • Mrs. Jang: 0

Makes sense, and the meta-guessing did indeed pay off, although I think a lot of the cast simply seemed to be correctly gauging the believability of the backstories more than anything else.

It is not surprising that there was definitive evidence that they were missing, as if they had found the family register under the seal, they would have found Yujin Kwak’s smoking gun.

Other things

  • Wasn’t disappointed much this season, but it was a disappointment that Jang Jin was never a detective or a criminal. I love his deductions, but I really wanted to see him play on the other side.
  • Speaking of which, here’s Jang Jin who is too caught up in thinking about the matter to realize that he was being fooled.
  • One of the reasons I was glad it wasn’t researcher Joo Shin Gyoju is that it’s extremely funny that they spent so much time trying to figure out why she went to Thailand when it was as simple as going on vacation and getting hit by a tuk tuk.
  • Putting your two idol members in the plastic surgery blender. No one is safe!
  • Jang Dong Min’s character wasn’t actually suspicious, but at least it was used well for comic relief.

Well…that was a great run, huh? My overall thoughts on the season won’t surprise anyone reading along, as I thought Crime Scene Returns could rival their best work. Not only was it effective in appealing to previous Crime Scene fans like myself, but people have also told me that they got into the show because of this season’s intrigue, so it almost seems criminal not to continue that momentum going forward to put. Kudos to the cast for winning me over by letting them develop chemistry among themselves to find more entertaining moments instead of having guests every time like I wanted.

Most importantly, I enjoyed talking to all of you here in the comments section of the recaps. The show is fun on its own, sure, but more than most shows, it’s really made for people to discuss and argue for. From exchanging deductions and theories about the case to thinking about the implications of the show’s meta to discussing the producers’ best poop moments, it was great to experience it with everyone.

Until next time…and there better be a next time.
