Local star student promotes sustainability and kindness: meet Amelia

Amelia has been a volunteer at Grow Living Stones for almost two years.

Aspinwall, PA, Pennsylvania – Star students can be found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages, and on debate stands, and in the community they are doing good things to make life better for us all.

Here at Patch, we’ve launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding children to their neighbors.

Why do you think the local star student should be recognized?

Amelia has been a volunteer at Grow Living Stones for almost two years. The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit rescues food from restaurants that would otherwise be thrown away. The meals are then served on Sundays to people from deprived areas, people with disabilities, the elderly and people who are simply lonely. Any leftovers are packed in plastic bags and given to people to eat during the week. When the city of Pittsburgh instituted a ban on plastic bags, Amelia realized the group needed to switch to using recyclable bags. She applied for a youth grant and received money to order 600 reusable bags, which she recently handed out at a church supper on Sunday. She promotes sustainability and friendliness at the same time.

What do you want everyone to know about the local star student?

Amelia is an honor student, but she measures true success by how she treats others. She understands that even a small gesture can have a huge positive impact on others.

Congratulations on your achievements and all our best wishes for the future, Amelia!
