Russell uses drunkenness as defense in fatal shooting in Monticello – Mix 94.7 KMCH

The man accused of fatally shooting an employee outside the Monticello Fareway store last fall plans to use drunkenness as a defense at trial.

Nathan Russell of East Dubuque, Illinois, is charged with first-degree murder, armed with intent, and felon in possession of a firearm. He has pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Monticello police say McAtee had been outside the Fareway store near the loading dock on the morning of Nov. 7 when he was shot in what appeared to be a random act of violence.

Russell was arrested two hours later in Hopkinton. McAtee died from his injuries.

Russell’s trial is set to begin on August 6 in Jones County. The Jones County Attorney Office says a request has been filed to change the venue, but the Court has not yet ruled on that request.
