Recycled milk cartons turned into building material

MILKLAB is working with saveBOARD to turn recycled waste, including long-life milk cartons, into low-carbon building materials that can be used as the walls of MILKLAB Lane at the Melbourne International Coffee Expo 2024, held from May 12 to 14.

The MILKLAB Lane stand will be made with sustainable materials, including saveBOARD, a low-carbon building material made from hard-to-recycle liquid cardboard used in long-life milk and juice cartons.

Both companies worked closely to create the walls of MILKLAB Lane by integrating packaging waste from milk cartons into the carton products. The plates do not contain additives such as glues, chemicals and adhesives. The plastic in the packaging acts as a glue and the color comes from the original consumer packaging.

Each plate saves 500 used beverage cartons from landfill. Each saveBOARD facility can recycle 4 million kilos of soft plastics and fibers each year at its facilities in Warragamba in Western Sydney and Hamilton in New Zealand.
