Carcinogenic Chemical Detected in MDH and Everest Products – Republic World

Cancer in spices: According to media reports, food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore have raised the alarm over the presence of a “carcinogen” substance in certain spice products from MDH and Everest. The Center for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong has flagged three herbal products from MDH and one from Everest for containing ethylene oxide, a pesticide classified as a ‘Group 1 carcinogen’ by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

MDH, Everest products recalled

The affected MDH products include Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala and Curry Powder, while Everest’s Fish Curry Masala was also identified. The CFS has initiated recalls and ordered sellers to stop selling these products after tests showed the presence of ethylene oxide exceeded permitted limits.

While both MDH and Everest Foods have yet to respond to regulators’ claims, the CFS has emphasized that food containing pesticide residues should only be sold if it does not pose any health risks. Violations can result in fines and jail time.

Singaporean spice recall

Similarly, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has ordered a recall of Everest’s Fish Curry Masala because its ethylene oxide content exceeds permitted thresholds. The SFA has ordered the importer to recall the affected products, stressing that ethylene oxide, although used in the sterilization of spices, is unsuitable for consumption and long-term exposure may lead to health problems.

Both regulators have advised against use of the affected products and urged people with health problems to seek medical advice. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, ethylene oxide is recognized as a human carcinogen, underscoring the importance of minimizing exposure to this substance.
