CHICO – Butte County Public Health is monitoring a case of meningitis and its possible spread, the department announced Friday evening.

The unidentified patient, who was visiting from another province over the weekend, contracted Neisseria meningitis, a bacteria that causes meningococcal disease, which can be life-threatening. The individual attended multiple parties in downtown Chico on April 12 and 13 after 11 p.m. at the fraternity houses of Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Tau, Theta Chi and Kappa Sigma.

BCPH recommends that anyone who attended parties during those dates and at those locations contact the Chico State Student Health Center or their primary care provider to inform them of their potential exposure – even individuals who have been vaccinated against meningococcal disease. The WellCat Health Center is open today from noon to 4 p.m.; it is usually closed on Sundays.
