Georgetown, Guyana: Two men caught with narcotics have been sentenced to seven days of community service. Both men were arrested on April 18, 2024 in two different cases.

The suspects have been identified as 37-year-old Avinash Kuttai, an old construction worker from School Road Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and 48-year-old Gildarie Persaud, a fisherman from Mon Repos, North Squatting Area, ECD.

Avinash Kuttai was arrested on April 18, 2024 for the offense of ‘possession of narcotic drugs’. He was then brought before the court of Sparendaam 2 and arraignedr Worship, Mrs. Abigail Gibbs where the charges against him were read and a plea of ​​guilty was entered.

Meanwhile, Gildarie Persaud was charged with possession of narcotic drugs contrary to Section 4(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotics Drug Psychotropic Substance Control Act, Chapter 10:10. He also pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven days of community service.

Several residents of the community took to their social media accounts and expressed their opinions on the incident. They raised questions about the sentence imposed on both suspects and expressed concern over the increasing criminal activities in the country.

A person with a Facebook account, George Perry, commented: “Her Worship appeared at the age of 37, which is why he was given community service. Other drug users should take note and make sure that if they are caught, they are right on him corpses.”

Another person commented: “Why don’t these people look at other serious crimes that are increasing so quickly? The authorities must take action, they must do something to control these criminal activities.”
