5 essential tips to keep your pet healthy this summer

Hydration is key: Make sure your pet has access to fresh, clean water at all times, especially during hot summer days. Consider placing several water bowls around your home and if you are outside, take water with you for walks or outings.

Protect against the sun: Just like people, pets can also get sunburned. Limit their exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours (10am to 4pm) and provide shade when outside. You can also use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas such as the nose and ears.

Exercise sensibly: choose walks in the early morning or late evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Sidewalks can get scalding hot and burn your pet’s paws, so stick to grassy areas or invest in booties for protection.

Beware of overheating: Pets can easily overheat in the summer months, which can lead to heat stroke. Watch for signs such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy. If your pet shows these symptoms, immediately move him to a cooler area and offer him water. Seek veterinary care if symptoms persist.

Prevent parasites: Fleas, ticks and mosquitoes are more common during the summer. Keep your pet on a regular flea and tick prevention regimen recommended by your veterinarian. Consider using mosquito repellents and heartworm preventatives to protect against mosquito-borne heartworm disease.
