The London Marathon 2024 sees EastEnders stars, Matt Hancock and Ruth Wilson battle through pain among celebrities

Celebrities have gathered to run the 2024 TCS London Marathon, with Chris Evans and Matt Hancock and Romesh Ranganathan among the starting line

The 2024 edition of the iconic London Marathon will see more than 50,000 runners tackle the 26.2-mile course through the English capital, with a number of celebrities taking part.

The celebrity race started in Blackheath before the course wound past some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks and some of the famous runners were photographed before heading to the start line. Actress Ruth Wilson, best known for her role in Luther, is running on behalf of Alzheimer’s Research UK in response to the diagnosis of her father Nigel, who took part in the first London Marathon in 1981.

Ruth was also joined by former Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes and TV presenter Jenni Falconer as they looked forward to the upcoming race. Virgin Radio presenter Chris Evans looked sharp with his wife Natasha Shishmanian as they prepared for the start, where newsreader Sophie Raworth also waited to set the historic course.

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan is joining the charity CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) for the first time, after the TV star’s past struggles with his own mental health led him to become a patron of the charity since October 2023.

The BAFTA-winning actor took to Instagram ahead of the big day, where he explained the reasons why he is running this year’s London Marathon. He said in a clip on the social media site: “I said I would never run a marathon, but here I am. I’m not sure where I would be today if I didn’t get help when I hit rock bottom. In fact, I don’t know if I would even be here. So I want to make sure more people are introduced to CALM’s life-saving services, and raise as much money as I can.”

Former MP and I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here! star, Matt Hancock, will trudge through the streets as two EastEnders stars will run in character, with the race part of an episode of the BBC soap. Emma Barton and Jamie Borthwick, who play Honey Mitchell and Jay Brown in Albert Square, will be filmed for Monday’s episode of the soap.
