Sustainability service Ridwell expands to Pasadena in time for Earth Day – Pasadena Now

Ridwell, a sustainability startup that recently launched in Los Angeles but was originally founded nearby in 2018 Seattleis expanding its pickup service for hard-to-recycle items to Pasadena this week, just in time for Earth Day on April 22. The company wants to make it easier for environmentally conscious residents to reduce their waste and improve their impact on the environment.

“As we celebrate Earth Month, Ridwell’s arrival in Pasadena is perfectly timed to help residents divert more waste from landfills and oceans,” said Ryan Metzger, Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Ridwell. “We’re proud to provide a solution that makes it easy for forward-thinking communities to create real change and waste less at the household level.”

Ridwell offers bi-weekly collections of items not accepted by regular recycling programs, such as batteries, light bulbs, plastic wrap and textiles. For a monthly subscription starting at $14, members receive a metal waste bin and reusable cloth bags to sort their recyclables. The company then collects the items and takes them to more than 200 carefully vetted partners who can recycle or reuse them responsibly, including local Los Angeles company ByFusion.

This service fills a critical gap in recycling options, as many of these materials often end up in landfills or incinerators if not properly disposed of. To date, Ridwell’s more than 90,000 members have diverted more than 50 million pounds of waste from landfills.

In addition to its recycling efforts, Ridwell also facilitates the pickup of items needed by local nonprofits such as Baby2Baby, Downtown Women’s Center, Project Ropa and Wags & Walks, allowing communities to help each other.
