The battle for the brother-in-law. A story about a family feud.

This man took to Reddit to share his story.

This happened about 4 years ago. I was married to my now ex-wife at the time.

Her sister “Alice” got married to “Roger”. But let’s back up for a moment so I can set the scene. It’s taking a bit of time, but be patient, friends.

I had a storied past with Roger and we didn’t care for each other at all, to say the least.

The man’s brother-in-law is not a good guy.

He was (is) a compulsive liar, slacker and cheat; and had virtually alienated Alice from most of her friends and family.

He and I had an argument about all of this, with me calling him out on all his BS.

The brother-in-law did everything he could to get back at the man.

In revenge, he said a lot of horrible lies about me to the family and had done his best to try to get me fired, as well as some other things I can’t discuss. Really bad things.

As a result we had to pay a lawyer to send him a cease and desist letter and went to NC with one of them.

I wouldn’t even want to be in the same building with him for any reason, including birthdays, Christmas, etc…

The man’s in-laws wanted everyone to be cordial.

After a few years I was still NC with one of them (my wife would talk to her sister occasionally, which didn’t really bother me), but I came under a lot of pressure from my in-laws to normalize things somewhat . You know, for the “good of the family.”

Now I got along well with my in-laws and it was very important to them, so I tried it. I would actually be at an event with them, but wouldn’t socialize or interact with Alice or Rodger.

Fortunately, the man was not part of the wedding party.

A few months later, they announce their engagement and start planning the wedding. My wife would be MOH and our children (6 and 4) would be flower girl and ring bearer.

Now I was definitely NOT in the wedding party (you need to understand this) and I was fine with that.

The brother-in-law’s friendliness was suspicious.

As the planning progresses, I’m told that Roger wants to “buy me a suit” as his way of making up for it, so I don’t have to pack a suit myself.

I had enough suits so this was a very strange request, but he comes from some money and said it was his way of making up for all the past BS.

Whatever, fine, I’ll come along.

I sent my measurements to the wedding planner along with those of my son. The wedding was in a different state, so I didn’t get to see the suit until we picked it up the day before the wedding.

This worried me, along with his insistence that I didn’t need to bring a suit, so I packed my own suit too – a nice charcoal gray two-piece suit with a white shirt and blue tie.

The man immediately understands his brother-in-law’s plan.

We fly into the state, check into our hotel and I go to the haberdashery to pick up the suits with my son and FIL (also not at the wedding party but also to pick up a suit).

It turned out that Roger had not bought us any suits, but had rented us the same cream tuxedo as his side of the wedding party. We actually try to dress up as the groomsmen, even though we’re not at the wedding.

The man and his wife had fun planning their revenge.

I immediately saw why he didn’t want me to pack and laughed about it, but said nothing and let him think he was over me.

My wife also thought this was quite hilarious and that’s where we formulated our plan.

On the day of the wedding, everyone wore their wedding suits (champagne dresses and cream-colored tuxedos) and I wore my charcoal gray suit.

The brother-in-law was furious, but did not tell the man directly.

When Roger saw me, he was cordial, but seemed a little irritated. I found out through the grapevine that he was furious. I wasn’t wearing the tuxedo. Which honestly made my day.

Now for the absolute best part, and wait for the little revenge: the photos.

Being a “close” relative, I was included in many photos by default, but my wife, thank goodness, made a point of pulling me into almost every photo she could.

The plan worked perfectly.

When the pictures came back it was great. In at least 60% of the photos I was there somewhere and stood out like a sore thumb. 8-10 people were all dressed the same in cream and white and me, in my almost black suit.

Alice was so angry she almost broke down and insisted that everyone get together to recreate the photos “properly,” which of course didn’t happen because this was three months after the wedding.

So yes. Enjoy your wedding album with its almost perfect color scheme and coordination.

Reddit users loved the writer’s revenge.

One person was disgusted by the idea of cream-colored tuxedos.

Another reader asked what the groom’s purpose was for the rental suit.
