Selena Gomez does had been in the public eye since childhoodand during that time, not only did she have to deal with growing up in public, but she had that serious health problems leading to a kidney transplant also. She has been outspoken in recent years about how her lupus battle has affected her ability to maintain a standard weight, and she says it was a very special dress that began to help her come to terms with her body as she fought her way into womanhood.

Yet she said she already had difficulty with her shape and varying sizes. When she was invited to the Met Gala that year, she felt “off,” but gained more power and control over her appearance, which helped her on the journey to self-acceptance.

I fluctuate a lot with my weight. I remember this night specifically: I didn’t feel good about my body. What was really great was that I actually got the chance to work on the dress that fit my body. I had so much fun shaping this dress.

The white Vera Wang dress with the black straps was beautifully fitted and really suited her body type as it flowed in a liquid-like fabric around her feet. She had paired it with a memorable floral headpiece for the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme that year, and the outfit as a whole was routinely listed among some of Gomez’s most notable red carpet looks of all time.

For her, it was also a standout fashion moment for a more personal reason, as it marked a period of growth and change for her as a person.

I think we have built something very beautiful together and something that suits me very well. That’s when I realized that I don’t need that 19-year-old body shape anymore, because I don’t have it.
