Back to politics – Greater Kashmir

Gone are the days when politicians would speak the truth to the masses. The current mode of operation of politicians in the world makes it easy to believe that politics is a game of deceit and it is a luxury and comfort for politicians at the expense of the interests of the masses. Nowadays we hardly encounter a politician who tells the truth.

And it is widely believed that two-facedness, double standards and deceit are their special characteristics, even though they swear by principles and ideologies. But there is no doubt that, if desired and determined, politics can be made ethically based.

Politicians like Washington, Luther, Lincoln, Gandhi and others have shown that politics can be enjoyable and complementary. What is certain is that unless political leaders act honestly, there can be no real social or moral progress. The politicians play a great role in establishing excellence in the society as they are fortunate to enjoy popularity among the public.

The politicians or leaders should not think that they alone have the right to rule people, but they have a just responsibility to guide people in the right direction and lead them to good. Material progress should not be the only concern of politicians, but it is their duty to right the system of society and push it towards healthy progress.

The poet of the East, Iqbal (RA) is right when he says in his eternal verses:

“Judah Ho Din Seyast Se Toa Rah Jati Hay Chengaizi”
Iqbal is very clear in this sense that politics without principles and integrity brings tyranny and barbarism and suppresses goodness and justice. No religion in the world says that politics is not part of religion and they are separate.

Today’s politicians take refuge in so-called democracy and legitimize their misdeeds under its garb. Every democracy today merely repeats the story of a struggle for power, to perpetuate power and to keep away any form of opposition. Political parties symbolize nothing more than bitter rivalry and lust for power. Rules, regulations and principles are thrown out the window and selfish goals and motives are achieved at all costs.

Today’s politicians try to keep values and politics separate because they know that politeness does not allow the adoption of short-term goals, but prefers values so that a better moral order and a better social system are created. In the current political order, values are least disturbed and the symbols of goodness and justice have undergone a radical change.

We see values and principles being sacrificed for the sake of opportunism and selfish gain. The current political atmosphere in most parts of the world is devoid of moral sense; Opportunism has become a matter of faith among politicians.
