PM Update: Chance of night frost tonight; Sunnier and warmer on Monday

We are near or at the high temperatures of the day, with the mid-50s being the most typical temperature. The warmest values are generally around and within the ring road. Other than a few raindrops east and south of Fredericksburg, we stayed dry. There may be a little sun before sunset, but let’s not hold our breath. There is a chance of some frost tonight, but tomorrow it will be sunnier and warmer.

See you tonight: Intermittent frosts are possible, especially in low-lying areas near and west of Interstate 95. Bring in those tender plants, which I hope you have kept in portable pots, per my advice! The sky should get brighter over time, but perhaps not in a stable way. The light breeze from the northwest will slowly diminish as pre-dawn temperatures reach the mid-30s at around 40 degrees.

Tomorrow (Monday): We’ll start the work week with mostly sunny skies and the beginning of a warming trend as high temperatures reach within a few degrees above 65 degrees. Expect mainly a light breeze from the northwest, with some gusts of around 25 km/h possible. Tonight it looks quiet under a mostly clear sky. Because of that combination, I don’t want to rule out a few frost spots in the usually coldest areas of the region. More generally, we should expect slightly milder low temperatures, in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Addressing concerns that recently dry conditions could turn into drought

I’ve heard grumblings about our recent pattern of less rain, but I wanted to reiterate our excess rain since January 1 and the lack of drought in our region. There are few places that have received less than 100 percent of normal rainfall since the beginning of the year:

The drought status in our greater region remains clear. Since last week, a slight increase in first-level drought conditions was seen in North Carolina, but nowhere else.

Looking ahead, I have found above average precipitation levels from this week through next month. This is reflected in the drought outlook for the month ahead, which keeps us clear.
