DOERKSEN: Abram Guy “Abe” – With aching hearts but deep appreciation for a life well lived, the family of Abram Doerksen announces his transition from this life and his liberation from his earthly trials on April 17, 2024. Abe Doerksen, formerly of Port Rowan, in his 93rd year.
Beloved husband of Helen (Janzen) for 68 years. Father of Janet & Darwin Rouse, Doug & Liz and Karen & the late George Hammond. Grandfather of Marc & Alicia Rouse, Erin Rouse, David Doerksen & fiancée Kathleen Griffin, Michael Doerksen, Harold Hammond and Elena & Jordan Ashton. Great-Grandpa of Evie Rouse and Beau Ashton.
Abe was born, worked and lived in the Port Rowan area all his life until he and Helen moved to Simcoe last year.
A determined entrepreneur, he bought his first work truck at the age of 17 and went into business with his brother Jake in 1948 as Doerksen Bros. The business expanded and in 1976 they purchased a grain and feed business in Port Rowan and opened it as Doerksen Farm Supplies Ltd. He finally sold the company in 2011 and retired at the age of 80.
Abe was a volunteer firefighter for the Port Rowan department for 40 years and retired as deputy chief. He also served in various positions over the years on the board of our family’s church, Erie View United Mennonite.
Abe was predeceased by his parents Aron & Katharina (Epp), and all 9 of his siblings and their spouses: Lena & Alex Hamm, Mary & Peter Lodde, David & Marie, Marguerite (Peg) & Nick Hamm, Kathleen & Henry Hiebert , Anna, Aaron (Butch) and Mary, Jacob, and Ella and Sam Kendall.
Relatives and friends will be received at the Jeffrey W. Glendinning Funeral Home, 36 Front Road Port Rowan, on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The funeral service will be held in the Clark Chapel of the funeral home on Monday, April 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM. Pastor Tom Warner takes the lead. Reception to follow the service. A private burial will follow at Bayview Cemetery, Port Rowan.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Norfolk General Hospital Foundation or the MCC would be appreciated by the family. Personal condolences may be posted at www.gffh.ca
