Bbmp: Bbmp converts Jayanagar Veterinary Hospital to Abc Center | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: The BBMP plans to convert the Jayanagar Veterinary Hospital, which was closed by the state government and handed over to the civic body, into an animal birth control (ABC) center in the south zone at an estimated cost of Rs 2.5 crore. BBMP officials, due to land availability issues, ABC center in south zone is currently located at Chamarajpet in west zone. BBMP sources said the government has issued an order to close the veterinary hospital on December 15, 2023, and later the state-owned animal husbandry. department requested BBMP to take possession of the property on January 8, 2024. Soon after taking possession, Palike officials decided to use the property to conduct contraceptive operations on stray dogs from the zone. BBMP had allocated a fund of Rs 5 crore to ABC centers in Mahadevapura and Bommanahalli zones. However, the project is under consideration due to the lack of suitable properties. Accordingly, the officials prepared a proposal to seek Rs 2.5 crore from this Rs 5-crore fund to set up an ABC center in Jayanagar. Palike administrator Rakesh Singh approved the proposal a few weeks ago. BBMP officials said they would set up the ABC center soon. The civic body has allocated Rs 9.3 crore to carry out ABC operations in 2024-25, and a tender process is underway to hire agencies for the same. A recent BBMP survey shows that there are nearly 2.8 million stray dogs in Bengaluru, of which more than 70% are neutered. A civic official said BBMP personnel collect dogs for ABC between 6 am and 7 am and take them to ABC centers for the procedure.
