City updates and library planning for expansions

The city manager’s report included discussions about completing erosion control inspections at six different construction sites, as well as cleaning up catch basins by street crews. At the police department on April 4, seven officers from the Walworth County Mobile Field Force all completed training to prepare for the RNC. An immigration panel was scheduled for April 15, which was free for all to attend at the Whitewater Community Engagement Center. The panel will detail the current immigration rate the City of Whitewater is currently facing and how immigrants can find different ways to legally enter the United States. Staff and paramedics participated in a parade in support of the UW Whitewater wheelchair basketball team, which would be an excellent outreach event. During the week of the eclipse, the City of Whitewater handed out approximately 250 kits of eclipse sunglasses for people to wear, and also hosted a viewing party for when the eclipse occurred outdoors. There have also been discussions about a multi-unit development on the Kowalski property in Whitewater. The Irvin L Young Memorial Library also plans to expand.

“The memorial library also planned to have a site plan review, there were many questions about the project and the properties surrounding it,” said City Manager John Weidl.

Under the events section, a number of economic developments have taken place in collaboration with the CDA, who are hosting a table discussion involving landowners, engineers, architects, civil servants, developers, bankers, real estate agents, architects and others to talk about housing issues and ways to to resolve these challenges to make housing in Whitewater less of an issue on April 25th.

The Hamilton Room will be one of the polling places for the upcoming elections. “I spoke with Jan and everything was perfect. It’s obviously a good fit for us and that’s why we decided to definitely be there in November,” said City Clerk Heather Boehm. Because the voting locations are located in UW-Whitewater, this will create a more efficient and distributed central location for voting, unlike other locations in the city, and will also improve the integrity and security of the election process.
