New Delhi: The Maldives have been in the news for quite some time now; Previously this was because of the conflict with India over tourism, and more recently because of the Parliamentary elections in Maldives 2024. More than 2 lakh people voted in the country’s parliamentary elections and 326 candidates were in the fray for 93 seats – including six new seats. The current ruling party in the Maldives, People’s National Congress (PNC) contested 90 seats and preliminary results say the party won more than 60 seats, roughly two-thirds of the total seats. Maldives Parliamentary Elections 2024: Preliminary Result

As previously mentioned, President Mohamed Muizzu’s ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has won a supermajority in the Maldives’ parliament. His party won 60 seats in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, the Maldives-based Sun Online reported. According to preliminary results, President Mohamed Muizzu’s PNC has won more than 60 seats, roughly two-thirds of the total number of seats. It does not include the independent candidates who contested with the support of the party and the candidates of the MNP and MDA. MNP and MDA are two parties affiliated with the ruling coalition.

Maldives elections 2024: party breakup

The ruling party candidates in the Maldives contested 90 seats. The candidates who participated in the elections also included 89 candidates from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP); 39 Democratic candidates; 10 candidates from the Jumhoory Party (JP); four candidates from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA); four from the Adhaalath Party (AP); two from the Maldives National Party (MNP); and 130 independent candidates. Notably, the then ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won a supermajority with 64 seats in the 2019 elections, while the then opposition party PPM-PNC secured a victory with just eight seats, the Sun Online report said.

As mentioned earlier, ties between India and Maldives have been severed since the ministers took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the photos of Lakshadweep Islands were posted on social media; Recently, during and after the presidential elections, the President of Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, criticized India and also asked our country to withdraw its troops from Male. Ever since a rift opened between India and the Maldives, the latter’s tourism has been hit hard.
