ChennaiUPDATED: Apr 22, 2024 07:50 IST

Playback singer Sid Sriram performed at Coachella 2024 and closed his set with Thiruppugazh. He took to his official Instagram page to share the video of his performance and explained why he chose to sing the Tamil religious song dedicated to Lord Murugan. He is the first South Indian artist to perform at Coachella. Last year Diljit Dosanjh performed at Coachella and made India proud and this year it is Sid Sriram.

Sid Sriram chose a mix of Carnatic and R&B music for his Coachella performance. He concluded his performance with Thiruppugazh and put Tamil religious songs on the world map.

Sid took to Instagram to share a video of him singing Thiruppugazh and shared a heart-warming note. He started the caption with ‘Vettrivel Muruganukku..’, a chant for Lord Murugan.

His note read: “If you had told me as a nine year old that I would end my @coachella set with the Thiruppugazh my mother had just taught me, I probably would have chuckled and started daydreaming again. Fast forward to 2024, first ever South -Indian artist who played at the festival (sic).”

Here’s the video:

He also wrote, “My name is Sid Sriram, I was born in Chennai, India and raised in the Bay Area, California. I come from a discipline called Carnatic music, I am proud of every damn part of who I am, and i promise you that we are on our way to changing the tide of music/love/healing around the world (sic).”

A few days ago, Sid Sriram shared a photo with his father and wrote, “I rarely post about this guy because he prefers to stay out of the public eye, but we took this photo right after I stepped off the stage after Coachella week 1 and I love it. Epitome of relentless drive, passion, precision and honesty. My manager, mentor and father.

Sid Sriram is a trained Carnatic singer and also a popular playback singer in Tamil and Telugu films. He also debuted as a composer for Mani Ratnam’s production venture, ‘Vaanam Kottatum’. He regularly collaborates with Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman.
